The top in this zonal tournament, which was sponsored by the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, was remarkably strong, which explains the large difference in points between the players. Timman and Miles qualified for the interzonal. Meulders had won a place in this zonal by edging out Weemaes and De Bruycker in a small qualification tournament.
