Surprisingly, the Belgian top boards more or less held their own against the much stronger Dutch team. On both sides, some strong players were missing: Donner and Euwe in the Dutch team and O’Kelly, Soultanbeieff, and Bussers in the Belgian team. Donner was actually supposed to play on first board. When he didn’t show up, van Steenis replaced him at the last minute.
