This edition of the FÉFB championship took place at the Centre culturel, Rue du Pont 7, of Hermalle-sous-Huy, a district of Engis, on May 12th to 15th and 21st to 23rd. It didn’t attract that many players and the main tournament was marred by a slew of forfeits. According to [1], which is my only source, Timmermans and Bolzoni withdrew “discouraged by their bad results”. Moreover, Flamion, a doctor, couldn’t be present in the third round because of professional reasons. Duhayon, on the other hand, didn’t show up in the last round “probable victim of Sunday evening libations”! The tempo was 40 moves in 2 hours, then 20 moves per hour with adjournment after 6 hours. Marc Janssens was tournament director.

With his rather unexpected victory, Minnebo qualified for the Belgian championship. Since he couldn’t participate, Van Houtte and Flamion represented the FÉFB in the elite Belgian championship. Mohandesi was selected to play in the A group there, but Anciaux ended up going instead. Meuter and Y. Dumont qualified for the elite group of the 1989 FÉFB championship.

Wanted

  • Almost all games.
  • First names for Delhaye and quite a few players in the B group.
