Around this time, the Bundeliga was played in four preliminary groups (North, West, South-West, and South), the winners of each qualifying for the final. De Bruycker played third board for tail-ender Kettig, which had qualified from the South-West group. In the last round, Bamberg only needed a tie against Kettig, which had lost its two previous encounters. After a hard fight, they managed exactly that.
