Around this time, the Bundeliga was played in four preliminary groups (North, West, South-West, and South), the winners of each qualifying for the final. O’Kelly played for reigning champion Solinger SG 1868, which qualified from the West preliminary. The veteran grandmaster had to concede a draw against an unrated player and lost against Pfleger. Solingen and Bamberg won their first match and drew their encounter in the second round, so the board points were to decide. In the end, the Bamberg team won with half a point to spare.
