This was one of the best tournaments of Winants’ career. In the 8th round, he caught up with Faragó, in the 9th round, he left him behind. Only in the very last round, trying to secure a GM norm, he pushed too hard, lost, and saw Faragó and Gaprindashvili catch up with him. Faragó had the better Sonneborn-Berger score and therefore qualified for the main group in 1988.
As far as I can see in [1], there were only two other Belgian players in all the subsidiary events: Valeer Maes, who had some very stiff competition in the reserves’ section and a certain Spanjer who finished with 3½/9 in section 9A.
[1] has pretty complete information. It has all the games, results, dates, and standings for the two main groups as well as for the Masters’ quadrangular. In Faragó-Winants, one move in [1] is different from in ChessBase; [1] seems more plausible, I feel. On the other hand, [1] gives Rogers’ rating as 2520 instead of 2525, as given by OlimpBase. In this case, I followed the latter.
Wanted
- The crosstables for the lower sections, in particular for the reserves’ section.
