The La Nation Belge cup.

For the second time, a tournament of national importance was organised under protection of the newspaper La Nation Belge. Colle took a convincing revenge for his disappointing performance from the previous year, although his main rival and title defendant, Koltanowski, was absent. The minor tournament was won by Oberman, but no strong players participated here.

Naturally, La Nation Belge ([2]) is my main source of information about the organisation of the tournament. It mentions that the game were played daily from 18:00 to 23:00, with the adjourned games being played on Sunday from 14:00 to 17:00. The tempo was 36 move in two hours, followed by 18 moves per hour. The five prizes in the major section were as follows: 275 BEF, 150 BEF, 100 BEF, 50 BEF, 25 BEF. Moreover, 400 BEF was distributed over the players proportional to the points obtained. In the minor section, there were only four prizes: 200 BEF, 120 BEF, 60 BEF, and 40 BEF. There was a participation fee of 20 BEF, to be paid to Mr. Van Beneden. The games were played in the rooms of Le Cygne at Grote Markt 9. Almost all games from the major section were published in [1].

A drawing of Colle published in La Nation Belge of July 9th, 1924.

Wanted

  • The first names of Van Beneden and almost all players from the minor section.
  • A few games from the main section and almost all from the minor section.
  • Some nationalities might well be wrong.
