I do not know how the players were selected, but the level was very high. The 24 participants were divided into four groups, the first two players from each group qualifying for the knock-out stage. Gurevich lost in the last round of the qualification group to Short and was eliminated. In the end, Anand won by defeating Bareev in the final.
