This small tournament was played five times between 1976 and 1980. It pitted four Dutch players against four Belgian ones in a Scheveningen system match. The venue was the Arsenaal in Willemstad. Van Welzenes was a rich Dutch business man who sponsored the tournament.

1976 Netherlands 9½ Belgium 6½ 16/16 Böhm Rooze 3
1977 Netherlands 11 Belgium 5 2/16 Kuijpers De Bruycker 2
1978 Netherlands 10½ Belgium 5½ 2/16 Kuijpers De Bruycker 2
1979 Netherlands 9½ Belgium 6½ 2/16 Böhm 3 Meulders 3
1980 Netherlands 10½ Belgium 5½ 5/16 Scheeren Meulders

There was also a prize for the player with the best individual score. Both teams, but especially the Dutch one, stayed mostly unchanged throughout the tournament’s history. The difference in strength between the two teams is starkly illustrated by the fact that, of 6 Belgian players, only Meulders and Rooze had a positive score, while van Scheltinga was the only Dutch player with a negative score. As mitigating circumstances, one might point to the fact that the Belgian team seems to have been a Flemish one, which is understandable, as it must have made the organisation easier, but which excludes some strong Belgian players. As a second point, it must be noted that, without Van Schoor, Belgium would have scored 26/60 – still a minus score, to be sure, but not a disastrous one. Of course, all these considerations are pointless when one realises that the Dutch team missed its strongest players: Timman, Sosonko, Donner, Ree – all absent.
