This was probably the most important tournament in Belgium since the world junior championship in 1955. All members of the EEC were represented, although the West German team was not as strong as it could have been. The Belgian team had a rather strange tournament: they lost four times – even against the relatively weak Irish team – then received a bye, then won twice and drew twice.
